Chargeback

Chargeback bills cloud costs directly back to the teams or business units that incurred them, making cloud spend a line item in their own budgets.

Chargeback creates the strongest financial accountability because teams pay for what they use. It requires trustworthy cost allocation and clear rules for shared costs (networking, support, shared platforms), which are apportioned using agreed keys.

Because it is operationally heavier and can create friction, many organizations start with showback and graduate to chargeback once allocation is reliable.
