Data egress
Also known as: Egress, Outbound data transfer
Data egress is data leaving a cloud provider's network to the internet or another region, and it is one of the most commonly underestimated line items on a cloud bill.
Major providers give a small monthly free allowance and then charge roughly $0.09/GB for outbound transfer to the internet, while inbound (ingress) is typically free. Cross-region and sometimes cross-availability-zone transfer is billed separately.
Egress is easy to overlook because it does not appear until traffic scales. Providers that bundle generous transfer allowances (such as DigitalOcean and Hetzner) can be dramatically cheaper for egress-heavy workloads even when their compute prices look similar.
